Visa Requirements

Tourist Visa

  1. Passport valid for at least 180 days and a minimum of two blank pages.
  2. Two recent, valid 50 mm x 50 mm photographs.
  3. Filled out documents in the document pack, complete with signatures.

Commercial Crew members/pilots, Media professionals, Armed forces members or Policemen, Social/Charity workers, Priests and Researchers visiting India as a tourist need to send a letter addressed to the High Commission of India, written by their employer stating the purpose of the visit.

In addition to the above documents, self-employed media professionals have to provide an undertaking addressed to the High Commission of India stating that their visit is not professionally related.

Visas for minors aged less than 16 require the following additional documents

  1. One copy of the child’s birth certificate clearly stating the names of both parents
  2. Consent letter signed by both parents addressed to the High Commission of India
  3. One photocopy of both parents’ passports and, if available, their current Indian visa. If the parents are Indian citizens, a copy of their UK resident status.
  4. A child custody letter in case the parents are divorced.
  5. A child benefit letter and a solicitor’s letter if the parent is a single parent.

Former Indian nationals need to send a copy of their cancelled Indian passport and their surrender certificate OR their passport and Indian visa if they have previously travelled to India.

Business visa

  4. Original, signed letter written by the UK Company on official company letterhead, clearly explaining duration of visit and nature of business.
  5. Letter of invitation, written and signed by the Indian company on official company letterhead, clearly explaining duration of visit and nature of business.

All letterheads should have the applicant’s name and the applicant’s passport details (Issue date, expiry date and passport number) and should be addressed to the High Commission of India.

Urgent Business visa

All the documents required for an urgent business visa are listed below:

  1. Passport valid for at least 180 days and a minimum of two blank pages.
  2. Two recent, valid 50 mm x 50 mm photographs.
  3. Filled out documents in the document pack, complete with signatures.
  4. Original, signed letter written by the UK Company on official company letterhead, clearly explaining duration of visit and nature of business.
  5. Letter of invitation, written and signed by the Indian company on official company letterhead, clearly explaining duration of visit and nature of business.

All letterheads should have the applicant’s name and the applicant’s passport details (Issue date, expiry date and passport number) and should be addressed to the High Commission of India.

In addition to the above mentioned documents, people applying for urgent business visas need to send the following

  1. A letter from the sponsoring organisation in UK, written on company letterhead, explaining reasons for the urgent business visa, the nature of their business, validity of the visa, probable length of stay, organisation and places to be visited and a promise that all expenses can be met.
  2. A letter from the sponsoring company in India, written on company letterhead, explaining reasons for the urgent business visa, the nature of their business, validity of the visa, probable length of stay, organisation and places to be visited and a promise that all expenses can be met.
  3. Residence proof (utility bills, council tax, agreement papers, indefinite stay stamp, etc.) for the past two years if the applicant is applying on the passport of their country of origin.

Former Indian nationals need to send a copy of their cancelled Indian passport and their surrender certificate OR their passport and Indian visa if they have previously travelled to India.

Note – 1. Non UK citizens for less than two years and Pakistani origin applicants/Pakistani nationals are not eligible for an urgent business visa.

Employment visa

  1. Passport valid for at least 180 days and a minimum of two blank pages.

  3. Filled out documents in the document pack, complete with signatures.
  4. Copy of the employment contract, with signatures of both parties. There must be a specific clause in the contract specifying income tax payment in India.
  5. Copy of the registration papers of companies offering employment in India.
  6. Copy of education certificates

Additionally, foreigners applying for honorary work (work without a salary) with a registered NGO are required to submit the following

  1. Proof of employment/Invitation letter from the NGO for voluntary work.
  2. Name, duration and place of voluntary work.

Journalists/People employed in Media need to fill and submit the undertaking form from their Indian employer.

People being employed in IT enabled services and IT software need to send the following additional documents

  1. Declaration in company letterhead stating that the company is in IT/ITeS.
  2. Confirmation from the Indian company in company letterhead stating that the company is Software Technology Park of India (STPI) unit or an Export Oriented Unit (EOU), clearly mentioning the registration number.

Foreign Technicians/Engineers visiting India for commission or installation of machines, tools or equipment need to mention the contract for supply of these machines, tools or equipment.

Foreign nationals sent for technical services/support and transfer of services/know-how for which the foreign company is paid a royalty/fee by the Indian company should mention said services.

Applicants employed in power and steel sectors will need to apply in the sub-category Project visa and fill the additional form in the document pack.

A foreign national employed in India needs to draw at least US$ 25,000 p.a. People exempt are:

  1. Language teachers (other than English)
  2. Ethnic cooks
  3. Staff, including translators, working in the High Commission of India and its embassies
  4. Voluntary workers doing honorary work.

Student visa

  4. Admission letter from the Indian educational institution. The letter must have details about the length of the course. The institution must be a recognised institution.
  5. The Bonafide letter from the college/school
  6. The receipt showing payment of fee from the college/school
  7. A document which clearly shows financial support for the stay in India and the tuition fee.

Entry Visa

  4. Invitation letter for short term courses like mountaineering, yoga, spiritual courses, etc. OR invitation letter offering unpaid/paid internships from concerned organisations/authorities including the letter from your UK college/university.

For dependants/family members of someone granted an employment visa, the following additional documents are required:

  1. The marriage certificate of the couple.
  2. The children’s birth certificates.
  3. A recommendation letter from the employment visa holder’s employer.

Long term Entry Visa (5 years)

As proof of Indian origin, former Indian nationals need to send a copy of their cancelled Indian passport and their surrender certificate along with one of the following

  1. A copy of applicant’s parent’s surrender certificate and a copy of their passport/ Indian passport and the birth certificate of the applicant.
  2. A copy of the applicant’s spouse’s surrender certificate and copy of their passport/ Indian passport and their marriage certificate.
  3. An affidavit declaring Indian Nationality signed by a First Class Magistrate in India.

  4. A signed copy of the invitation letter from the conference organiser in India.
  5. A copy of the letter from the UK institution represented.
  6. A copy of the event clearance for the conference issued by Ministry of Home Affairs of the Government of India.
  7. Administrative approval from the Nodal Ministry of the Government of India.
  8. Political clearance from the Ministry of External Affairs of the Government of India.
  9. Clearance from the corresponding State government(s).

Journalist visa

  1. Passport valid for at least 180 days and a minimum of two blank pages.

  4. A letter from your employer explaining purpose of travel with a detailed programme of all places which will be visited for all journalism purposes.
  5. Companies/People who want to film documentaries should submit the following additional documents
  6. Undertaking
  7. Synopsis/Script
  8. Detailed list of locations where filming will occur
  9. List of equipment which will temporarily be imported to India

Once the High Commission of India receives all information, it will be forwarded to concerned authorities for clearances. Allow a minimum of 10 weeks for the clearances.

Research visa

Transit visa

  4. Proof of both onward travel to India and return travel from India – usually confirmed air tickets will suffice.

Visas for minors aged less than 16 require the following additional documents

  2. Consent letter signed by both parents addressed to the High Commission of India
  3. One photocopy of both parents’ passports and, if available, current Indian visa. If the parents are Indian citizens, a copy of their UK resident status.

  5. A child benefit letter and a solicitor’s letter if the parent is a single parent.

Transfer of visa
